Credentials: Braid, Jason Roher, Dear Esther, humble indie bundles, I think you get it.
I dont normally write reviews but when I do, its because I really want to support the game. You probably came to read this review because the concept of the game sounds fantastic. Let me assure you, that the concept really is fantastic. The mood, atmosphere, plot and characters are all well crafted to the themes and concepts advertised. We can even see the aliens as a metaphor for the players experience of the unknown. Just as we are being immersed in a new game universe, the character is literally being confronted with an alien creature.
So why 3 stars. Quite frankly, its the user interface. The iphone uses tilting or compass rotation to control player roation. These are horrible interfaces that are somehow supposed to mimic the fine tuned senses and motor control of the remarkable human body. If I were to go blind, I would expect to have a heightened sense of my motor control abilities. Instead, this interface acts as a handicap. Its like Daredevil went blind but also became a parapalegic. Im not an athlete by any means but Im pretty good at military drill and I could probably do two hundred right turns blindfolded and open my eyes facing the same wall. Im also pretty adept at exploring places in the dark and I do love orienteering. But the interface isnt going allow you to maintain your sense of direction. One of the key elements is knowing which way north is. Why then would the developers choose to use controls that dont work? Did they ever notice that none of the hundreds of compass apps are worth a dime if you cant also be walking in a straight line at the same time?
So this all boils down to great thematics meets terrible UI equals mixed UX. That being said, the developers plan on releasing a PC version which I am confident will remove the need to use gimicky interface. So that being said, buy this app!
